Vaccine rollout in Mallorca

Monday, December 28th, 2020

Last weekend has marked the start of the vaccination campaign across Europe, including Spain. In Mallorca, the rollout began on Sunday, 27th December.

Nursing home residents and staff are the first in line to be immunised on the island. The first vaccinations were carried out in the Oms-Sant Miquel Nursing Home in Palma de Mallorca on Sunday evening.

Over the next two weeks, the first dose of the vaccine will be offered to the entire care home population on the Balearic Islands, including all care home staff. The second dose will follow 22 days later. From today onwards, between 500 and 1000 people are to be vaccinated daily.

Next in line to receive the jab in Mallorca are all healthcare workers as well as severely ill and disabled people who are being cared for at home.

Following this, the injection will be offered to those over 65, people from poorer socioeconomic backgrounds, keyworkers and pregnant women.

The Pfizer Biontech vaccine will arrive in Mallorca in several batches over the next few weeks.

If things go to plan, between 65% and 70% of the total population of the Balearic Islands will be vaccinated by early summer, just in time for the start of the main tourist season.
