Beyond the Numbers: Understanding Palma Airport’s Latest AirHelp Score

Thursday, June 11th, 2026

If you have kept an eye on aviation news recently, you might have spotted the release of the latest AirHelp Score global rankings. As one of Europe’s busiest holiday gateways, Palma de Mallorca Airport (PMI) is always under the spotlight.

This year’s results have sparked plenty of conversation. At first glance, Palma’s ranking might make you wonder, but when you look at the data more closely, a very different, and much more positive, picture emerges. Let’s dive into what the AirHelp Score actually means, how the world’s airports fared, and why Palma is holding its head high.

What is the AirHelp Score?

For those unfamiliar with it, the AirHelp Score is an annual global assessment designed to rate how well airports serve their passengers. Rather than relying on a single metric, AirHelp combines three distinct factors to create an overall score out of 10:

  1. Flight Punctuality (60%): By far the heaviest weighting, this tracks how many flights depart and arrive exactly on schedule.
  2. Service Quality (20%): This is determined by passenger feedback regarding airport staff, cleanliness, wait times, and security queues.
  3. Food and Shops (20%): A rating of the retail options, cafes, and restaurants available to passengers waiting for their flights.

The Global Picture: From Best to Worst

To truly understand any airport’s score, you need to look at the wider global landscape. In the latest survey, AirHelp assessed 279 airports across 76 countries.

The scale of scores is remarkably tightly packed, proving just how competitive global aviation is:

  • The Global Champion: The highest score in the world went to Panama City International Airport, securing the #1 spot with an impressive 8.48 out of 10.
  • The Global Baseline: At the absolute bottom of the table, ranking 279th, was Tunis Carthage International Airport in Tunisia, which achieved an overall score of 5.50 out of 10, dragged down by a 5.3 rating for punctuality.

Where Does Palma Airport Sit?

In this year’s global ranking, Palma de Mallorca Airport achieved an overall score of 7.16 out of 10, placing it 244th among the 279 international hubs evaluated.

While the overall ranking may appear to give cause for concern, a closer look reveals that 7.16 is actually a very solid, respectable score.

In Excellent Company: Breaking Down the Percentages

To understand why a score of 7.16 is so reassuring, it helps to see how tightly packed the global results truly are. Out of all 279 airports assessed worldwide, only 30 airports (just 10.7%) managed to score higher than 8. Meanwhile, a staggering 230 airports (82.4%) scored between 7 and 8. This means the vast majority of the world’s major international hubs sit in exactly the same performance tier, putting Palma Airport in excellent, highly reliable company alongside some of the world’s most famous travel hubs.

Why a Score of 7.16 is Better Than it Looks

A score of 7.16 places Palma firmly in a healthy, middle-of-the-road category globally. It is miles ahead of the actual global baseline of 5.50, and there are two very important reasons why the score reflects a highly successful operation:

1. The Summer Rush and the Weight of Punctuality

Remember that 60% of AirHelp’s score comes down to flights being precisely on time. Palma is a highly seasonal holiday airport. During the peak summer months, it welcomes millions of travellers and manages an extraordinary volume of charter and commercial flights simultaneously.

When peak summer demand hits the European aviation network, air traffic control restrictions and delays cascade across the continent. Because Palma handles such a massive concentration of flights in these peak windows, minor knock-on delays are inevitable, and this is what impacts the punctuality score. It isn’t a reflection of Palma being a poorly run airport; it is simply the natural byproduct of being one of Europe’s favourite summer destinations.

2. Excellent Modern Facilities

When passengers step inside the terminal, the facility boasts a highly functional infrastructure designed to process large numbers of travellers. It is worth noting, however, that the day-to-day airport experience has been slightly impacted recently due to the extensive building and renovation works that have been ongoing for some time. Fortunately, there is excellent news on the horizon: the end of these major upgrades is now firmly in sight. Once fully completed in the near future, these improvements are set to significantly enhance passenger comfort, ensuring that Palma’s excellent range of Spanish and international shops, restaurants, and terminal facilities become even slicker and more competitive on the global stage.

Looking Ahead

Independent data like the AirHelp Score is always a welcome benchmark to keep improving. Palma’s teams work tirelessly alongside airlines and ground handlers year-round to optimise baggage wait times, streamline security, and keep departures moving as smoothly as possible, even on the busiest Saturdays in August.

So, if you are flying through Palma Airport soon, rest assured that you are passing through a modern, efficient, and friendly Mediterranean hub that is proudly holding its own on the world stage!
