Mallorca has experienced a spell of unusually unsettled winter weather, with strong winds, heavy rain and rough seas affecting the island. The recent storm, Storm Nils, caused widespread disruption across Mallorca, particularly along the coast and in exposed areas.
At Palma de Mallorca Airport, strong crosswinds created challenging conditions for pilots, especially during take-off and landing. While winter can bring occasional storms, the frequency and intensity of recent weather systems have been higher than normal for this time of year.
One of the most talked-about incidents involved a Eurowings aircraft arriving from Germany. During its final approach, severe gusts caused the aircraft to rock noticeably, forcing the crew to abort the landing at the last moment.
In total, several flights were cancelled or diverted, including services to Ibiza and Barcelona, as well as routes from Munich. While such situations can be frustrating for passengers, they underline that safety is always the top priority in aviation. Go-arounds and diversions are routine procedures when weather conditions fall outside safe limits.
This winter has seen an active sequence of low-pressure systems tracking across Spain and the western Mediterranean. These systems have brought:
Meteorologists note that such patterns are becoming more frequent, with warmer air holding more moisture and fuelling more intense weather events. While Mallorca is no stranger to wind and rain in winter, the scale of recent storms has been exceptional.
The good news for travellers is that forecasts suggest a gradual return to more settled conditions. While there may still be occasional breezy or showery days, temperatures are expected to remain mild for the season, with brighter spells becoming more frequent.
Airlines and airport services at Palma are now operating normally again, and schedules are stabilising as conditions improve.
Despite the recent challenges, Palma Airport remains well prepared to handle adverse weather, and disruptions have been managed efficiently. As conditions calm down, visitors can look forward to smoother journeys and the familiar advantages of winter travel to Mallorca: fewer crowds, pleasant temperatures and stunning landscapes refreshed by the rain.
If you are travelling soon, it’s always wise to check your flight status in advance. Overall, the outlook is increasingly positive for passengers flying in and out of Palma de Mallorca Airport.
