Travellers flying via Palma de Mallorca Airport this Saturday, 8/11/2025, should be aware of a short disruption to air traffic. Aena has confirmed that all commercial flights will be paused between 11:30 a.m. and 1:00 p.m.
This is to accommodate a military air display celebrating the 75th anniversary of the Son Sant Joan Air Base. The event will feature F-18 Hornet fighter jets, helicopters, and other aircraft performing over the island as part of an open day at the base. The airport’s control tower will focus exclusively on managing these aerial activities during the display. Fortunately, the closure has been carefully scheduled in advance, so no commercial flights are expected to be affected or delayed.
The Son Sant Joan Air Base, located adjacent to the airport, will host a full day of celebrations on Saturday from 10:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.. Visitors will be able to view aircraft both in the air and on the ground, including supersonic F-18s, an Airbus A400 military transport, an NH-90 helicopter, and a Canadair firefighting seaplane.
Friday’s official ceremony was attended by senior military officials and local dignitaries, marking the base’s long-standing contribution to security and service in the Balearic Islands.
In addition to the air display, passengers should take note of severe weather warnings in place for the weekend. The Spanish Meteorological Agency (Aemet) has issued an orange alert for parts of Mallorca, including the Serra de Tramuntana, north and northeast of the island, due to the arrival of a deep low-pressure system bringing heavy rain, strong winds (up to 80 km/h), and waves reaching three metres.
Other areas, including Ibiza, Formentera, and southern Mallorca, are under a yellow alert for moderate rain and wind. The Emergency Services have advised residents and visitors to avoid unnecessary travel and limit outdoor activities, particularly in areas under orange alert.
While Palma Airport’s temporary airspace closure should not impact scheduled flights, passengers are advised to check with their airline for any last-minute changes. Given the forecast storm conditions, travellers should allow extra time for journeys to and from the airport and stay updated on the latest weather alerts from Aemet and local authorities.
With spectacular aircraft displays in the skies and a dramatic storm front on the horizon, it promises to be a memorable and eventful weekend in Mallorca.
