La Seu Cathedral’s ‘Magic Eight’ Phenomenon: A Spectacle of Light and History

Wednesday, November 1st, 2023

As the calendar turns to the 11th of November, a beautiful spectacle awaits those who visit La Seu Cathedral in Palma. Weather permitting, the “Magic Eight” phenomenon unfolds, enchanting onlookers with a mesmerising play of light.

On this special day, as the first rays of the rising sun penetrate the cathedral’s east-facing rose window, a captivating, circular pattern of light forms on the inner wall of the west wing. Eventually, this radiant display converges with the opposite rose window, creating a distinct figure resembling the number eight. The cathedral’s two splendid rosettes each boast a remarkable diameter of 13 metres, comprising a grand total of 1,115 individual pieces of stained glass.

Interestingly, experts suggest that this fascinating occurrence was not a deliberate design but is linked to the cathedral’s historical orientation towards Mecca. This in turn can be traced back to La Seu’s origins as a former mosque, a reminder of its rich and diverse heritage.

However, the captivating spectacle depends on the cooperation of the morning sun, which, even in sunny Mallorca, is not always guaranteed in November. This bi-annual event, known as the Fiesta de la Luz, tends to draw a large crowd of both locals and tourists. If you wish to witness this beautiful display, an early start is a must, as the “Magic Eight” phenomenon occurs between 8:00 and 8:30 in the morning. The cathedral’s doors open at 7:30 a.m. on that day, to accommodate eager spectators.

In the event of unfavourable weather conditions or if you are unable to visit the cathedral on the 11th of November, the next opportunity to witness this spectacle is on the 2nd of February 2024, as this event unfolds twice a year.

Alternatively, La Seu Cathedral offers a virtual experience through its YouTube channel. And if you like what you see, you may want to mark your calendar for the next occurrence, when you might be able to view this extraordinary play of light in person.
