Easing of face mask rules in Mallorca

Thursday, June 24th, 2021

This Saturday, the 26th of June, will see an easing of the strict face mask rules in Mallorca. Since their introduction nearly one year ago, face masks had to be worn in public spaces at all times – indoors as well as outdoors. This is set to change from Saturday when it will once more be possible to move around outdoors without a face covering.

Since the wearing of a face mask can be burdensome, especially during the hot summer months, many of us will breathe a sigh of relief at this news.

However, you won’t yet be able to get rid of your masks completely, as face coverings are still required in indoor spaces – a fine of up to 100 Euros awaits those who don’t comply with this regulation.

This applies for example on the plane, in the airport terminal, on buses and trains, and in taxis. Furthermore, face masks are still compulsory inside cafés, bars, and restaurants. Here they can only be removed once your food or drink has been served.

The Balearic regional government still advises caution and highlights the following: face mask rules have not been abolished but simply been relaxed. A face mask still needs to be readily available at all times and will need to be donned on entering public buildings or when using public transport. Additionally, face coverings may on occasions still be needed outdoors in crowded places, when it is not possible to keep a safe distance of at least 1.50 metres to those around us.

Despite these reminders, the relaxation of the rules will make a big difference to locals and visitors alike, who will once more be able to enjoy the sunshine on their faces!
