Formentor Access Restrictions Summer 2026

Wednesday, March 25th, 2026

Why is access to Cap de Formentor restricted?

Cap de Formentor is one of the most famous and popular tourist attractions in Mallorca. Due to its beautiful and spectacular views, a trip to the island’s northernmost point is a must for many holidaymakers. This leads to a dramatic increase in traffic during the summer months, which exceeds the capacities of the narrow serpentine roads by far and puts a huge strain on the environment.

In order to calm the traffic on the road to Formentor, access restrictions during the peak season have been in place for several years running. What started as a pilot project in 2018 has become the norm during the summer months, albeit with slight variations from year to year.

Access rules for summer 2026

When do the access restrictions apply?

The restrictions for private vehicles, including hire cars, motorcycles, and trucks, apply from the 15th of May to the 15th of October 2026. During this period, the road is closed daily between 10 am and 10 pm. These dates were adjusted for 2026 following a request from the Pollença Town Hall to better manage the high volume of visitors in May.

Where do the restrictions apply?

The restrictions are in place on the Ma-2210, the road that leads to Cap de Formentor, starting at the roundabout at Port de Pollença. There are two sections, and slightly different rules apply to each of these.

Section 1 – limited access:
This road section begins at the Port de Pollença roundabout and ends at Formentor Beach. It is possible to use this part of the Ma- 2210 during the restricted hours to access Formentor Beach, provided that there are parking spaces available in the official Formentor Beach car park. Roadside parking is not permitted. A barrier is in place at the Port de Pollença end of section 1, which will be closed once the car park is full. There are also electronic signs that provide information about the availability of parking spaces. The Formentor Beach car park has a maximum capacity of 300 vehicles and tends to fill up very quickly.

Section 2 – no access:
Section 2 encompasses the area from Formentor Beach all the way up to the Formentor Lighthouse (Far de Formentor). This road will be closed to all private traffic with only a few exceptions (please see below).

Who is exempt from the access restrictions?

  • Apart from peninsula residents, people with limited mobility may also be able to gain access to the restricted road sections if they are in possession of a permit.
  • You can apply for a permit by sending an email to the traffic department: [email protected]. You will need to apply at least 3 working days prior to your planned trip.
  • Cyclists and hikers are also allowed to access the area (without the need for a permit).
  • TIB (Transports de les Illes Balears) buses.

What happens if I travel in the restricted area between 10 am and 10 pm?

The rules are strictly enforced via traffic cameras. If you are caught driving in the restricted zones without a permit during the designated hours, the DGT (Dirección General de Tráfico) imposes fines ranging from 100 to 200 Euros. In 2025 alone, over 2,300 fines were issued to unauthorised drivers.

Please note:

Beware if you are planning an early morning trip to the lighthouse: To avoid being fined, you will need to leave the restricted area before 10 am.

Loophole closed

In previous years, unauthorised drivers had been able to make use of a loophole. The fine they received could be cancelled by providing a receipt for an item purchased at one of the kiosks in the restricted area. Since 2023, this is no longer an option.
