Stormy weather across the Balearic Islands is continuing to cause widespread disruption at Palma de Mallorca Airport, with passengers experiencing significant delays for a second consecutive day.
After a difficult Monday of late departures and arrivals, the situation at Palma Airport has worsened this Tuesday. According to the airport operator Aena, more than fifty flights have already been affected by delays, impacting both arrivals and departures to and from mainland Spain and European destinations.
The Spanish State Meteorological Agency (AEMET) has issued an orange alert for Mallorca, Ibiza and Formentera, warning of heavy rainfall of up to 50 litres per square metre in one hour and as much as 120 litres in 12 hours. Thunderstorms, hail and strong wind gusts of up to 90 km/h are also possible. Menorca remains under a yellow alert, where rainfall is expected but of lesser intensity.
The regional Directorate General of Emergencies and Interior has convened the Meteobal Plan Committee to coordinate safety measures with local fire brigades, police, transport and utilities. Precautionary steps include the closure of several parks in Palma and public campsites in the Serra de Tramuntana.
Residents and visitors are being advised to secure their homes, avoid flood-prone areas such as underground garages or streams, and limit travel unless absolutely necessary. On the roads, authorities recommend using motorways and main routes where possible, keeping mobile phones charged, and avoiding any attempt to drive through floodwater.
If you are flying via Palma de Mallorca Airport today, please be aware of the following:
Although conditions are expected to improve gradually towards midday on Tuesday, the situation remains highly changeable. Passengers should be prepared for further disruption until the storm system moves away from the Balearic Islands.
