Palma de Mallorca Airport Earns Level 4 Carbon Accreditation

A Step Forward in Sustainability

Travellers passing through Palma de Mallorca Airport can now take pride in flying via one of Europe’s leaders in airport sustainability. The airport has recently been awarded Level 4 in the Airport Carbon Accreditation (ACA) programme, a recognition of its determined efforts to reduce carbon emissions and operate more sustainably.

Rapid Progress in Just a Few Years

What makes this achievement even more remarkable is the speed of progress. As recently as 2021, Palma Airport was still accredited at Level 2 “Reduction” (focusing on managing and reducing emissions). In just a few years, it has advanced to Level 4 “Transformation”, showing a strong commitment to transforming its operations and cutting emissions far beyond incremental improvements. This fast climb highlights the airport’s determination to play a leading role in Europe’s push for greener aviation.

What the Accreditation Means

Airport Carbon Accreditation is a global certification scheme that evaluates how airports manage and cut their greenhouse gas emissions. It operates on seven levels, ranging from basic carbon mapping to full carbon neutrality and beyond.

Reaching Level 4, known as “Transformation”, shows that Palma Airport is doing more than just reducing emissions where it can. The airport is fundamentally changing the way it runs its operations to achieve real, measurable carbon cuts. Importantly, it also means working hand in hand with partners such as airlines, ground services, and transport providers to make sure the whole airport community is moving towards the same climate goals.

Who is Behind the Accreditation?

The scheme is run by the Airports Council International (ACI), the worldwide association of airports. ACI represents airports of all sizes across the globe, working to promote professional excellence, share best practices, and advocate for the interests of airports in areas such as safety, operations, and sustainability. Their independent accreditation gives passengers and the wider public confidence that real progress is being made, verified by external audits.

How Palma Airport is Making Changes

To reach Level 4, Palma Airport has introduced a broad range of measures, from energy-saving improvements in heating, cooling, and lighting to the adoption of electric vehicles within Aena’s fleet. The airport is also supporting third-party initiatives such as shared ramp equipment, charging points for electric vehicles in car parks, and electric gardening machinery. These changes not only reduce emissions but also set an example for other European airports.

Why it Matters for Passengers

For travellers, this achievement means choosing Palma Airport aligns with more sustainable air travel. While flights themselves remain a major contributor to emissions, airports play a crucial role in reducing their own footprint and encouraging greener practices across the aviation industry. Palma’s rapid progress signals a broader commitment by Spanish airports to achieve net zero emissions by 2030, with more airports moving through the ACA levels in the coming years.
