Weather Delays on Sunday, 21st of September

Passengers flying from Palma de Mallorca Airport (PMI) this Sunday are being advised to prepare for possible delays due to worsening weather conditions across the island. A cold front is moving in after a warm late-summer weekend, with the State Meteorological Agency (Aemet) issuing orange and yellow alerts for heavy rain, storms and strong winds.

Forecasters warn that parts of Mallorca, particularly the Serra de Tramuntana, the north and northeast, could see more than 40 litres of rain per square metre in just one hour. Gusts of up to 90 km/h are also expected, especially overnight into Monday morning. The change in weather will also bring a drop in temperatures, with highs capped at around 25°C and lows falling to 18°C. Further yellow weather warnings are likely on Tuesday, especially in the north of the island.

Cyberattack Delays on Saturday

On Saturday, Palma Airport experienced occasional delays related to a cyberattack that affected several major European airports. The incident targeted Collins Aerospace, a provider of check-in and boarding systems, forcing airports such as Brussels, Berlin Brandenburg, and London Heathrow to carry out passenger processing manually. Although Palma Airport did not have any problems with its systems, some of the flights to and from the affected airports were delayed.

This weekend marks the last of the busy summer season at Mallorca’s airport. Aena, the Spanish airport operator, has urged passengers to keep a close watch on their flight status before travelling, as high passenger numbers and adverse weather are increasing the risk of delays.
