Palma de Mallorca Airport saw significant worker unrest today, as airport staff gathered for a protest over poor working conditions and job insecurity. The demonstration was organised by one of Spain’s largest and oldest trade unions, the UGT (Unión General de Trabajadores). It took place between 08:00 and 12:00 and drew around 50 workers. The union has warned that further action could lead to serious disruption in August, right in the middle of the busy summer holiday season.
The union accuses aviation service companies of exploitative practices at Palma Airport. It demands urgent talks between Aena (the airport operator), the Balearic Government and union representatives to find long-term solutions.
Among the main complaints are:
UGT has accused companies such as Swissport, Groundforce, Menzies, EasyJet, Eurowings, Jet2, Ryanair, and others of failing to respect workers’ rights. The union also criticised the ongoing construction works at Palma Airport, describing them as “never-ending” and harmful to staff safety and wellbeing.
The protest took place at the airport’s arrivals terminal and remained peaceful, with no major disruption reported to passengers. However, UGT has made it clear that, if their demands continue to be ignored, they are prepared to intensify actions, even threatening to “bring the airport to a standstill” during August.
For now, flights and services are running as normal (apart from weather-related delays), but travellers should remain alert. The union’s warnings suggest there could be strikes or more disruptive protests if no agreement is reached soon.
Remember to:
Today’s protest follows the recent pay rise won by hospitality workers in the Balearic Islands, which many believe has inspired other sectors. With record passenger numbers at Palma Airport during the summer, any industrial action could have a significant impact on holidaymakers and residents. The weeks ahead will be crucial in determining whether airport operations remain smooth or if serious disruption hits one of Spain’s busiest airports.
