Passengers travelling via Palma de Mallorca Airport today, Thursday 10 July, are facing significant disruption due to an intense summer storm that swept across the island early this morning.
Heavy rain, thunder, and lightning hit much of Mallorca at dawn, triggering a yellow weather warning from Spain’s State Meteorological Agency (AEMET). The severe conditions have led to restrictions on air traffic at Palma’s Son Sant Joan Airport. Enaire, the body responsible for managing Spanish airspace, limited both take-offs and landings for safety reasons during the height of the storm.
While no flights have been cancelled so far, delays are widespread. According to AENA, the airport operator, nearly all departures have been affected, with knock-on delays impacting arriving flights as well. The disruption began early this morning as aircraft movements were slowed down due to poor visibility and stormy conditions. Although the storm is now gradually moving eastwards towards Menorca, the early delays are having a lasting impact on the day’s flight schedule.
Inside the terminal, passengers are also experiencing the effects of the heavy rain. Leaks in the roof have returned, and maintenance staff have placed buckets in affected areas to collect water. Some parts of the terminal have been cordoned off to manage the situation.
AEMET expects the weather to improve from mid-morning onwards, with skies gradually clearing into the afternoon. Temperatures are forecast to reach around 32 °C, though a few isolated showers may still occur later in the day. The storm has also brought a slight drop in temperatures following recent heatwave conditions.
If you are flying today, it is strongly recommended to check the status of your flight directly with your airline before heading to the airport. Expect possible delays and allow extra time for your journey to the airport, especially as the morning storm also caused localised traffic congestion in parts of the island.
