A New Railway to Alcúdia: Mallorca’s Planned Transport Upgrade

Connecting Mallorca’s north to the island’s heart by train

For decades, Mallorca’s scenic northern coast, including the popular resort town of Alcúdia, has remained disconnected from the island’s rail network. That is finally set to change. The Balearic Government has unveiled an ambitious plan to extend the railway line from Sa Pobla to the Port of Alcúdia, which is a development that promises to transform travel for both residents and visitors.

Why a train to Alcúdia matters

Alcúdia is one of Mallorca’s top holiday destinations, known for its long sandy beaches, family-friendly hotels, and historic old town. Yet, despite its popularity, there is currently no train service to the area. Mallorca’s existing rail system, run by Serveis Ferroviaris de Mallorca (SFM), connects Palma with central towns like Inca, Sa Pobla, and Manacor, but no coastal resorts.

A long-awaited connection

The idea of linking Alcúdia to the train network isn’t new. Previous proposals stalled due to environmental concerns, land disputes, and funding issues. Now, with broad political support and a revised route that avoids sensitive areas like the s’Albufera Natural Park, the project finally seems to be moving forward.

The route: From Sa Pobla to the sea

The new 17.1-kilometre line will start at a newly built station just outside Sa Pobla, featuring park-and-ride facilities. From there, it will pass through a 5-kilometre tunnel beneath the hills of Son Fe and Sant Martí to minimise environmental impact.

The line will include five tram-style stops within Alcúdia’s urban area, with the final stop at the maritime terminal in Port d’Alcúdia. Other stops will be located near the beach, the sports centre, and the old town. The total travel time from Sa Pobla to the port will be just 24 minutes.

Timeline and investment

Currently, the project is still in its approval process. Providing that no major hurdles are encountered, the Balearic Government plans to begin construction in 2028, with the line expected to be completed by 2031. The total budget is set at €225.5 million, with most funding allocated to construction. The line is projected to serve over 2 million passengers annually.

All aboard for Alcúdia

The extension of the rail line to Alcúdia is more than a transport project: it’s a major step toward modern, eco-conscious travel in Mallorca.
