Cap de Formentor, the northernmost point of the island, is a popular tourist destination and can get very busy over the summer months. A lot of visitors travel there by car and the narrow and winding access roads can easily get overcrowded, as they are not laid out to cope with high volumes of traffic. This has in the past led to chaotic and sometimes dangerous road conditions in the area.
The Balearic Transport Ministry has now introduced new measures to improve the situation. From Monday, 9th July 2018 to 31st August 2018, the road between Formentor beach and the lighthouse will be closed every day from 10.00 am to 7.00 pm for all private vehicles, including hire cars. In the evenings and early mornings, the road will remain accessible for all traffic.
So, if you want to visit the lighthouse and enjoy the breath-taking views at the top of the cliffs during the day, you will need to make use of a shuttle-bus. Although it is possible to drive as far as Formentor beach, the official recommendation is to leave the car in Port de Pollenca and take the shuttle-bus from there.
The bus journey time from Port de Pollenca to Formentor beach is around 30 minutes, while the entire journey to the lighthouse takes just under 1 hour.
A single ticket from Port de Pollenca to Formentor costs €1.55, a return ticket €3.10.
The bus connection to Formentor is route 353, which is the route from Can Picafort. If you are coming from that direction, you may be able to complete the entire journey by bus. Please note that you will have to change buses at Port de Pollenca, where you will continue your journey in one of the light blue buses marked “Far de Formentor” on the side. The following stops are served by route 353:
Can Picafort – Can Picafort (Son Bauló) – Platja de Muro (Càmping) – Platja de Muro – Platja d’Alcúdia – Port d’Alcúdia – Alcúdia – Port de Pollença (Club del Sol) – Port de Pollença -Formentor
