Sa Coma

Found on Mallorca’s east coast, Sa Coma is one of the furthest places from Palma Airport in Mallorca.  Depending on traffic it should take 60 minutes to drive from Palma airport, as it’s 69km/43miles away.

Sa Coma lies between S’Illot to the south and Cala Millor to the north, both resorts are easy to walk to.  As one of Mallorca’s modern purpose-built resorts, it comes with all the essential facilities and also has a family feel.

There is an environmental  protection area, Punta de n’Amer, a nature reserve on the headland between Cala Millor and Sa Coma.  It’s possible to walk around this on a 3.2km/2miles track.  There is a 17th century watchtower on the way to climb up, Castell de n’Amer, which offers great views.

Like Cala Millor, Sa Coma has a very sandy beach with just under a km of light coloured sand and shallow waters.  The crescent shaped beach was awarded the Blue Flag in 2024 for water quality and beach cleanliness and has a variety of water sports to choose from.

If you want to venture north to Cala Millor it is approximately 2.3km/1.4miles on the road connecting Sa coma to Cala Millor, which cuts out the headland.  There is also a tourist train that connects the two and starts from S’Illot.

The promenade runs from the north end of the Sa Coma beach and connects S’Illot and Cala Morlanda to the south.  It has good views from a rocky outcrop separating Sa Coma beach and S’Illot resort.  The promenade is a pedestrian area for the most part and has shops, bars, cafes and restaurants.

The promenade continues from S’Illot via a footbridge crossing over a motionless river which has formed a lagoon before the beach, this bridge connects S’Illot with Cala Morlanda resort.  The Cala Morlanda promenade runs in a zigzag fashion and at the end of the beach there is a special track to walk or wheel on which continues along the cliff’s edge for about a km with stunning views.

Sa Coma is mainly a family resort catering for hotel guests.  There isn’t the night life away from the hotels that there is in Cala Millor, but that is only a couple of km’s away should you want it.

Things to do in Sa Coma

Horse Riding

There is a riding center right by the beach at Sa Coma, ‘Rancho Sa Coma’.  It is at the north end of the beach next to the headland and on the opposite side of the road to the Burger king.  There are a number of horses ponies and donkeys.  Riding excursions usually head out over the headland, Punta de n’Amer, which is a nature reserve.  Depending on the season it may be possible to ride across the beach.  This riding center is very convenient for those staying in Sa Coma and with its proximity to the nature reserve for treks, yet it has mixed reviews on the internet.

There is another riding center quite close by, Rancho Willy, in neighboring Cala Bona.  It is about 300m from Cala Bona’s harbor, heading out on the road towards Son Servera, it is easy to find.

Safari Zoo

This Safari park stroke zoo is by the edge of Sa Coma and is located in Mallorcan countryside where the scenery is reminiscent to the savannahs of Africa.  It is possible take the Safari train or to drive your own car through the 3km/2miles long Safari course.

There are various playgrounds for children and there is also a restaurant.  You can see various animals such as, rhinoceroses, zebras, gnus, giraffe, gazelles, cheeky monkeys and other exotic creatures.

Mini Golf Paradise

The courses are in Sa Coma on the Safari hotel complex.  All visitors are welcome and the courses are open from May to October; they are free for guests staying at the hotel.

There are two mini golf courses to enjoy with the family, 18 holes each.  These courses are beside each other and set amid trees, waterfalls, streams and little bridges.  There are also some electric boats for children to use on a mini lake which are coin fed.

You can access the course at the rear of the hotel complex on Carrer del Savinar.   If you follow the path by the side of the Eroski supermarket it is about 200meters from there.

Market

There isn’t a morning market in Sa Coma but an evening market every Wednesday in the summer at around 7:00pm by the Coma Gran Hotel.

Also, nearby at Son Servera every Friday morning at 8am to 1:30pm approximately there is a larger morning market.  This is about an 11- minute drive from Sa Coma.

Fantasy Park

Fantasy Park is found in neighboring Cala Millor and is aimed at family fun.  It has a bouncy castle, bungee trampolines, and go-karts amongst other attractions and is mainly a children’s play area.  It is set back from the middle of the beach in Cala Millor located opposite the Sportsman bar.  Many rides cost a euro a time but some are a little more.

Albatros Diving

The dive center is located in Cala Bona, a few meters south of the harbor.  It is in front of one of Cala Bona’s  sheltered bays, ‘the Laguna’ beach.  For guests not staying Cala Bona, the dive center offers a free transfer service.

Albatros Diving is an official diving center and air tank filling station also with visual equipment inspection status.  It is a Gold Palm PADI 5 Star, some of the highest quality certificates.

There is an office for Sa Coma in the Hotel Club Blau Mediterraneo.  For Porto Cristo Nova or Cala Mandia there is an office in the Blau Punta Reina Resort.

Boat Trips Sa Coma

There are boat tours on offer from the south of Sa Coma beach on the pier set on the rock.  There are daily boat trips, including a glass bottom boat and cruises north to Cala Ratjada and south to Porto Cristo.

In Cala Ratjada, there is a Saturday morning market and in Porto Cristo there is also a market on Sundays.

Karting Cala Millor

There is a Karting track in neighboring Cala Millor called Karting Cala Millor.  This is not to be mistaken with the Karts at Fantasy Park.  It is located in line with the center of the beach and about 400m inland.  It’s past the Fantasy park center which also has go Karts but not so specialized as the Karts at Karting Cala Millor.  They have various sized go Karts that are suitable for all levels and ages.

6 Golf courses

There are 4 golf courses within twenty minutes of Sa Coma.  These are Canyamel, Capdepera, Pula and Son Servera.  Pula and Son Servera are the nearest being about ten minutes.  There are another two courses a little bit further; an 18-hole Vall d’or Golf at 24km/15miles away and a 9-hole La Reserva Rotana Golf at 17km/10.5miles away.

Son Servera Golf is Mallorca’s second oldest club and an 18 hole members club.  However green fees are offered on their website for 9 or 18 holes.

Pula Golf is one if the Mallorca’s more select courses.  The club offers green fees for 9 or 18 holes, as well as a driving range and golf equipment to hire.

Canyamel Golf is a par 73, 18-hole course set in beautiful country side and proves a golfing challenge.  The club has a full range of golf equipment and services on offer and has green fees for 9 or 18 holes.

Capdepera Golf is set in verdant Mallorcan countryside and offers reasonable green fees when discounts are taken advantage of.  The 15th hole on the course has been repeatedly voted by Mallorca Magazine as the most beautiful golf hole on Mallorca.  The course was designed by Dan Maples a famous US Architect.

Places of Interest

Punta de n’Amer

This is the headland that separates Cala Millor and Sa Coma and it is an official nature reserve.  This is ideal for gentle and relatively small treks into Mallorcan nature giving great views.  There are well established tracks to take which lead to and from Cala Millor, around the headland and to a central watchtower where it’s possible to climb up and get refreshments.

Caves

These caves are not located in Sa Coma but are only around 20 minutes in a car journey.  Both cave complexes the Caves of Hams and the Caves of Drach are close to Porto Cristo.

The caves of Drach are a lot more well know and a bit bigger but either set of caves are definitely worth visiting and will leave you with memories for a lifetime!  They both have a subterranean lake, a lighting show with fitting music and even boats.
