Taking a taxi or arranging a private transfer are probably the quickest ways of getting from the airport to portals Nous. We have looked at some of the different aspects involved in both options, to help you decide which is best for you.
Taxis do not require you to book or pay in advance. All you have to do at Palma airport is walk outside the arrivals hall and the taxi rank is directly in front of you.
Taxis are also easy to spot as they are all painted white and have the colours of the Mallorcan flag across both front doors and on the bonnet. They likewise have the universal illuminated taxi sign on the roof to let you know if they are occupied or available for hire.
All taxis in Mallorca operate using a taximeter that calculates the fare based upon the number of kilometres travelled. The taximeter, however, does not start at zero but at a set starting price that depends upon the hour and what day it is. In other words, you can expect to pay more at night, weekends and on public holidays. While this is quite standard around the world, taxis in Mallorca add onto the basic fare a supplement for either picking up or dropping off at the airport.
Now we have explained about how taxis work in Mallorca let’s have a look at what it is actually like to take a taxi from the airport to your holiday home or hotel.
Palma Mallorca International Airport is the 3rd busiest airport in Spain and the 12th busiest in Europe handling over 22 million passengers per year. During the peak summer months taxis operating from Palma airport are often stretched beyond their limit, which equates to long lines at the taxi rank.
👍 TIP: Pre-booking a private transfer saves you unnecessary wating times at the airport!
Taxis in Mallorca are only permitted to carry 4 passengers and that includes children, no matter what age they are. All taxis are saloon type cars and as such can only fit 3 medium sized suitcases in the trunk. Taxis in Mallorca do not have child safety seats so if that is a requirement, or you have other special needs, you should consider taking a private airport transfer rather than a taxi.
⚠️ A word of warning
Due to long lines at the taxi rank during the summer, unlicensed pirate taxi drivers are a problem touting for fares at the airport. If you are approached in the arrivals hall by anyone telling you they are a taxi driver ignore them as they are not insured to carry passengers and you are opening yourself up to being ripped off.
Due to the high volume of traffic during the summer, several private transfer companies operate in Mallorca and while all offer to either pick you up or drop you off at the airport they are not the same when it comes to conditions and the level of service. Basically, a private airport transfer is like having a chauffeur waiting to meet you at the airport. Once you clear customs and enter the arrivals hall, you will spot your driver holding a sign with your name on it. He will then help you with your luggage and escort you to the vehicle you ordered and you are on your way.
When booking a private airport transfer you can select the type of vehicle that best suits your needs, be it a regular car, limousine or even a minibus capable of carrying 19 people. You can also request child safety seats and vehicles fitted out with special equipment for people with reduced mobility.
If you have never used a private airport transfer service before it can be difficult knowing which one is the best. What we recommend you do is have a look at the various Mallorca holiday forums and read the reviews on websites such as TripAdvisor.
Our favourite, which also happens to be the highest rated on TripAdvisor, is a company called Solhop. What we like about Solhop is that their cars tend to be newer than those of some other private transfer companies and are of a higher standard. Plus, unlike with some others, you do not need a debit or credit card to book a car – you just type in your information and destination and they give you a price for the journey. Once you arrive at your destination, you simply pay your driver the quoted price. Solhop also understands that there are times when you might have to amend your booking or even cancel it and does not penalize you with any extra charges or fees.
Private airport transfer services such as Solhop know that cost is a major consideration when deciding to use their service and take that into consideration when quoting you a price. When you factor in all the supplements added to a normal taxi fare and the convenience of knowing the fare up front as well as being met at the airport, there isn’t much in it.
👍 TIP: If you are travelling in a group of 5 or more or have a lot of luggage, a private airport transfer beats taking multiple taxis by a wide margin.
